Chapter Ten

Hannah stood before the mirror in her hallway, playing with her hair. Back in high school, her blonde hair had been so long. Now at twenty five years old, she’d cut it short for a cropped look that she felt better suited her mature point in life. But she couldn’t help wondering, did it make her more attractive? Would she be more desirable with longer hair, like Elaine’s? Were her brown eyes completely unappealing?

“What’s all the primping for?” asked Dad as he walked down the hallway. “What’s today? Just a random Wednesday?”

“I’m not primping,” Hannah insisted, though she knew she was. She cared what she looked like just as much as the next person, to make sure she had the appearance of a decent human making a normal contribution to society. But rarely did she care what she looked like because she was going to be seeing a member of the opposite sex. Someone that she wanted to impress, or attract even. It was hard admitting it to herself, but she couldn’t help wondering if Jeremy was still just a charming flirt, or if he was sincerely interested. Was it all in her head? Was it all just wishful thinking?

Her shoulders sagged and she looked down at her feet.

“Hey, why the long face?” Dad said, taking her by the shoulders. “You look beautiful, just like every other day.”

“Thanks, Dad.” Hannah forced a smile.

“You know you can talk to me about anything, right?”

Hannah nodded.

“Is it the McLachlan guy at the town hall?”

Squishing her face together, Hannah sighed. “Yes.”

“Is he giving you grief?”

“No, he… we just have a history together from high school, and now, it’s complicated.”

“From high school? How did I not know about this?” Dad asked, slightly offended.

“It wasn’t even a thing, it’s just… I don’t know what it is.” Hannah sighed.

“Is there anything I can do to help?”

“What’s your advice for how to know if he’s into me at all?”

Dad cringed. “Maybe I’m not great with advice, after all. I mean, I know the one that goes, ‘the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.’ That’s true, so maybe work that in your favor.”

Hannah laughed, and she was grateful for the relieved tension.

“But I think your mom would say something like, ‘Have patience and be brave, and everything will turn out all right.’”

Tears welled in Hannah’s eyes. “That sounds like Mom.”

She looked over to her mom, who was resting on the living room couch with Blakely on her feet. It was hard not to have her around anymore. Her physical presence was always calming, but how Hannah wished she could hear her mother’s wisdom again. But she would take dad’s advice: have patience and be brave. Hannah could bear things patiently, but the being brave part was hard.

A knock at the door shook them apart, and Dad moved to open the door.

“Good morning, guys,” said her mom’s nurse, Abby. “You headed to work, Hannah?”

“Yup, you caught me just as I’m walking out the door.”

“Well, I’m here to have a great day of therapy with your mom, so I hope you have a great day too.
